Church banner, 19th century, Poland. Church banner decorated with appliqué and embroidery. Made from fabric elements forming architectural decoration; figures sewn using the appliqué intarsia method onto a red one side and beige other background. Right panel: in the center of a neo-Gothic arcade between two towers, a figure of the Madonna and Child floating on clouds. Left panel: in a similar architectural frame with a woven pattern, a figure of a bishop in pontifical robes, identified as St. Nicholas. The Madonna panel is sand-colored; the bishop panel is cherry red. The Madonna figure is appliquéd from smaller fragments of velvet, patterned silks, paillettes, and beads. The banner’s edge is trimmed with gold fringe. The arcade fabric has a satin background, embellished and brocaded with metal thread. Materials: fabrics, embroidery; height 147 cm, width 102 cm., A rectangular textile panel in faded rose with a central archway rendered in metallic gold thread framing a standing robed figure; the figure wears a tall headpiece and a long robe with faded blue and gold detailing and holds a staff, with exposed areas of flesh-tone on the face and hands; ornate gold architectural motifs flank the arch and extend across the lower portion, with a scalloped gold-trimmed border and fringe in gold along the edges; visible colors include rose, gold, blue, flesh-tone, and small accents of darker tones.
