Antependium, antependium. Fragment of church embroidery. On cream silk satin 46 gauge, green selvedges with embroidery and glued appliqué of colorful silk threads, gold and silver threads, and sequins. In the center, in a large radiant medallion, is the IHS monogram with a cross and three nails. The background is filled with projections of stylized floral sprigs. Small sprigs in the corners and on the sides of the medallion are embroidered; the remaining background motifs are appliquéd glued. 18th century, Poland. Fabric; height 82 cm, width 47 cm., A rectangular piece of pale beige fabric with a large circular embroidered motif near the center featuring a radiating sunburst of blue stitches around a central round area filled with yellow-gold embroidery; scattered around the central motif are several floral and scrollwork embroidered designs in yellow-gold, with clusters of small red flowers and green stems and leaves appearing along the left and right edges and in a few interior spots; the fabric shows slight wrinkling and frayed edges, and the visible colors include beige, blue, yellow-gold, red, and green.
