Church napkin. Blue silk rep cloth embroidered with gold thread. In the center, within a radiant halo, a sun with the inscription in Polish: THE BLOOD OF OUR LORD JESUS IS CHRIST, WHICH PURIFIES US FROM ALL SIN. Corners show stylized bouquets of flowers in an Eastern style, with a crescent and two stars above each; a similar bouquet appears at the center of each edge. Along the edges an inscription in Polish: NOT WITH GOLD, NOT WITH SILVER, NOT WITH THINGS CONTAMINATED, WE REDEEMED YESTESMI, BUT THE BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST, THE UNDAMAGED LAMB. Resplendent fabric density: 36 weft threads and 29–32 warp threads per cm. One workshop edge preserved, the other cut. Embroidery with gold thread on a yellow silk ground, laid stitches, stitched with yellow silk thread. 17th–18th century, Poland. Height 67.5 cm; width 57 cm. Materials: silk, gold thread. Function: church furnishing/sacred textile., A square textile with a pale blue-green background embroidered in gold thread, showing a large stylized sun with radiating elongated rays at the center, surrounded by several smaller starburst shapes and crescent moons, ornate floral and foliate motifs in the corners and along the edges, and a decorative narrow border framing the piece.
