Embroidery sampler, Sampler with a cross-stitch pattern of trails, flower bushes, and letters. Blue embroidery on white canvas. Bands of geometric and floral ornaments with geometrized twigs and leaves; one edge with several larger stylized flower-bush motifs. In the corner, the silhouette of a double-headed eagle. Between the bands, beside various geometrical flower tendrils, a double Holbein-stitch ornament. 17th century, Silesia. Embroidery on fabric; height 81.5 cm, width 23 cm., A rectangular piece of fabric lying flat with a background color of off-white or beige and detailed embroidery in shades of blue and a small spot of red, showing a series of horizontal bands across its width. The left side has a few larger, more open motifs including stylized plant- or tree-like shapes and geometric forms separated by narrow vertical stitched lines, while the rest of the surface is filled with several tightly packed horizontal bands of repeating ornamental patterns such as floral motifs, interlocking geometric shapes, and small decorative borders. The embroidery appears hand-stitched with visible thread texture, and there are small areas where the fabric shows slight discoloration or faint stains in brownish tones. The edges of the fabric are slightly uneven and the overall palette is primarily off-white, blue, with a touch of red and some brownish spots.
