Church napkin. Napkin of white, thin, sparsely woven plain-weave batiste, embroidered with silk thread and metal thread on a silk base; fabric sewn together in the center. Embroidered motifs of small floral sprigs and stars along the long edges; corners with larger stylized flower bouquets emerging from a single stem. Embroidery mainly with white threads, details in metal threads. One end bears an embroidered inscription: Katarzyna z Obory Oborska / AD. 1636. In the center, within a frame, a partially illegible inscription: BODY M.../.../AND MY TRUE BLOOD/IEST..../WHO WILL FEED. Flat embroidery with silk yarn and pierced metal threads. Stitches: satin and cord. Metal threads: cut copper-gold plate and silver-gold plate woven on a silk core. 17th century, Poland. Dimensions: height 236 cm, width 64 cm. Function: church parament napkin. Subjects/motifs: flowers, leaves, plant ornaments, sacred art., A rectangular, light-colored sheer cloth with delicate woven texture lies flat against a dark background; the cloth is primarily white or off-white with subtle warmer beige spots and tiny darker specks scattered across its surface, and it has a narrow finished border featuring embroidered floral corner motifs and small decorative openwork elements in matching white thread; the corners show ornate swirling floral embroidery and there are a few faint irregular marks and worn areas on the fabric.
