Church napkin. Napkin of white, thin, sparsely woven plain-weave batiste, embroidered with silk thread and metal threads on a silk base; fabric sewn together in the center. Embroidered motifs of small floral sprigs and stars along the long edges; corners feature larger stylized flower bouquets emerging from a single stem. Embroidery mainly in white threads, details in metal threads. One end bears an embroidered inscription: Katarzyna z Obory Oborska / AD. 1636. In the center, within a frame, a partially illegible embroidered inscription: BODY M.../.../AND MY TRUE BLOOD/IEST..../WHO WILL FEED. Flat embroidery with silk yarn and pierced metal threads; stitches include satin and cord. Metal threads: cut copper-gold plate and silver-gold plate woven on a silk core. 17th century, Poland. Fabrics; height 236 cm, width 64 cm., A rectangular piece of translucent fabric laid flat against a dark background, primarily white in color with subtle variations in tone; the fabric shows a woven texture and a few faint spots and small worn areas; decorative floral embroidery appears near each corner with swirling vine motifs and small clusters of circular elements in white and a pale metallic or off-white sheen; a narrow embroidered border runs along the top and bottom edges with tiny cross-like shapes and small floral accents in similar pale colors; there is a visible seam running vertically near the center where two pieces are joined, and a small folded tab of fabric is visible at one short edge.
