Lace fragment, bobbin lace, mid-19th century, Brussels. Two ribbons: one wider with leaves, the other narrower with a chain; interlacing to create ovals containing garlands. Branches with flowers or vine branches with fruit extend upward from the ovals. Background in fond de gaze. Lower edge semicircularly serrated, upper edge straight. Materials: lace. Width 28 cm, length 187 cm., A scalloped piece of lacework with an intricate floral and leaf embroidered pattern laid against a smooth background; the lace is a creamy off-white with detailed loops, mesh netting, and raised stitched motifs forming bouquets, sprigs, and clustered blossoms, while the background is a muted gray that contrasts with the lace; the lace edge shows repeating rounded arches with decorative openwork and stitched borders, and the lower edge finishes with a narrow stitched hem.
