Caption
Lace fragment, needle lace, delicate pattern of plant tendrils and numerous spans, in the style of Italian punto a vermicelli lace. Lower edge with fine serrations; upper edge straight with a sewn-on bobbin insert and a double ladder. 17th–18th century, France. Lace, length 86 cm, width 6 cm., A vertical strip of delicate lace with an open, irregular floral-like pattern runs down the center of the image, bordered on one side by a narrow, more tightly woven edge; the lace is off-white or cream colored. Behind the lace is a large rectangular panel in a muted taupe or grayish-brown color that fills most of the frame. Around the outer edges of the image is a wider border of a light beige or cream paper texture. The overall composition shows the contrast between the intricate off-white lace, the solid taupe rectangle, and the light beige surrounding border.
