Church banner, Embroidered and painted textile, 17th century, Poland. Church banner with a scene showing Mary the Immaculate Conception Coronation of the Virgin Mary surrounded by God the Father, Christ, and the Dove of the Holy Spirit. Central image partly embroidered with gold thread on canvas and partly painted skin tones and flowers in oil on canvas; embroidery laid on a low backing; border of red silk velvet embroidered with floral tendrils. In the center Mary is surrounded by angels in rays; above right God the Father, above left Christ, above Mary's head the Dove. At the bottom two figures of monks in habits with folded hands, from which rose branches grow; between them the inscription “S/MARIA/SINIELABIE/CONCEPTA/ORAPRO/NOBIS.” Lower edge serrated in a semicircle: central larger “tooth” with a stylized palmette containing the letters IHS and around it the letters “GS/ KS/ IP”; smaller side teeth with stylized tulip branches. Materials: textiles, embroidered textiles. Dimensions: height 106 cm, width 65.5 cm., A rectangular textile banner with a scalloped lower edge and fringed sides, primarily in shades of deep red and muted gold, features an ornate central panel depicting a group of figures on a pale silver-beige background surrounded by a red border with metallic embroidery. The central scene shows a robed central figure with a halo-like embellished area, flanked by several smaller winged figures and two adult male figures above, all rendered in pale beige and metallic threads with touches of flesh tones and dark hair. Around the central panel, a decorative vine motif with stylized flower shapes in metallic silver and gold winds along the red ground. The lower scalloped area includes a central cartouche with an elaborate metallic emblem and two side lobes each displaying a single stylized flower motif. Overall colors visible are deep red, burgundy, muted gold, metallic silver, beige, pale flesh tones, dark brown, and small areas of green.
