One of eight fragments of a liturgical vestment with three figures of saints enclosed in architectural frames: top — a saint with a book and an abbot's cross; middle — a saint with a book and an executioner's sword; bottom — a saint with a book and a sword St. Paul. Embroidery and appliqué: figures appliquéd on linen canvas; embroidery with gold thread laid and stitched with colored silks or nue and silks with a flat split stitch. Background, architecture, and floor on a string backing. Colors: gold, red, blue several tones, Indian rose, and green several tones. 1st half of the 16th century, Netherlands. Height 112 cm, width 10 cm., A narrow vertical textile panel showing a series of three haloed standing figures arranged one above the other, each set within decorative niches and separated by patterned bands; the top figure wears robes with green and gold tones and a blue halo area, the middle figure wears pinkish and cream robes and holds a long object while standing on a patterned base, and the bottom figure wears blue and gold robes and holds a bowl-like object; the panel background features metallic gold thread throughout with woven decorative motifs in blue, green, pink, cream, and beige, and the borders are edged in a woven gold tone.
