Armchair, wickerwork ornament, battle scenes, knights, plant ornament, dogs, ca. 1500 or 1st half of the 16th century, Sweden, Norway, piece of furniture, seating piece, height 112 cm, width 75 cm, depth 58 cm, A carved wooden chair back with a dark brown and muted black patina showing wear and touches of reddish-brown underlayer, featuring a top crest with two upward-facing stylized animal heads on each side, a central panel with intertwined vine and leaf scrollwork, a middle band with a woven lattice motif, and a lower panel carved in relief depicting a dynamic scene of two mounted figures engaged in combat with spears and round shields; the side stiles have twisted rope-like carved fluting, the lower apron has curved carved forms and a repeating scalloped motif, and the surface shows areas of lighter wood exposed where the finish is worn.
