Chair, origin unknown, Rococo style, ca. 1750–1765, Germany. Rococo chair with volute and shell ornamentation, plant decoration including acanthus, female figures, flowers, and ribbon-and-pincer motifs. Boarded inlaid high backrest showing a lady in a crinoline surrounded by flowers, framed by two intertwining U-shaped ribbons. Rectangular originally upholstered seat supported by cabriole legs decorated in bas-relief with motifs at the top shells on the knees terminating in volute feet. Wavy-cut lower frame decorated with acanthus leaves; seat frame with wavy outer outline enclosing a padded central section. Backrest has a clearance, angular stiles, and a wavy-curved upper section. Piece of furniture seating, height 115 cm, width 53 cm, depth 63 cm., A wooden chair back with a curved top and a rectangular inset panel featuring a decorative marquetry scene; the wood shows warm brown and honey tones with darker brown grain and black inlaid accents; the central inlaid design depicts a seated figure surrounded by floral and scrolling motifs in lighter and darker wood shades; the frame around the panel has a slightly darker brown finish and there are small darker spots on the vertical side rails; the background behind the chair is a plain light gray.
