Cabinet, late 17th century, Northern Germany, / Poland, height 70.1 cm, width 89.2 cm, depth 55.9 cm. Cuboid cabinet with a drawer at the top and double doors below, richly decorated with openwork engraved fittings with grotesque motifs and fantastic animals. Door leaves veneered on the inside with rosewood and ebony in geometric arrangements, divided by inlaid bone veining, with figures in engraved bone: signed Hippocrates on the left and Hermes on the right. Behind the doors are twelve compartments. Drawer and door locks fitted with engraved steel plates; the drawer lock blocks the left door leaf. Steel hinges. Ornament includes grotesques, wickerwork, fantastic figures, plant tendril; subject figures include Hermes and male figures. Function: storage piece., A rectangular wooden chest with a dark brown finish stands against a pale background, its front facing the viewer and showing ornate dark metal hardware with scrollwork and rounded decorative edging; the top appears darker and more worn with visible texture, and the metal accents have a dark, almost black patina contrasting with the warm brown wood.
