Cabinet, pre-war, grotesques ornament, fantastic animals, Hermes mythology, male figures, wickerwork ornament, fantastic figures, plant tendril. Cuboid cabinet with a drawer at the top and double doors below, richly decorated with openwork engraved fittings with grotesque motifs. The door leaves are veneered on the inside with rosewood and ebony in geometric arrangements, divided by inlaid bone vein, with figures in engraved bone, signed — Hippocrates on the left, Hermes on the right. Behind the door are twelve compartments. Drawer and door locks fitted with an engraved steel plate; the drawer lock blocks the left door leaf. Steel hinges. Late 17th century, Northern Germany, Poland . Piece of furniture, storage piece. Height 70.1 cm, width 89.2 cm, depth 55.9 cm., A wooden chest with a warm brown finish and visible wood grain sits against a pale gray background; the chest has several dark metal straps and corner brackets with a slightly aged, dark gray to black patina, and there are decorative scalloped metal edges and ornamental metalwork at the lower corners; the top surface appears darker with worn areas and a few lighter scuffs, and the wood panels show a long horizontal seam and some cracks and scratches.
