Cabinet, late 17th century, Northern Germany or Poland — cuboid storage piece height 70.1 cm, width 89.2 cm, depth 55.9 cm. Cabinet with a top drawer and double doors below, richly decorated with openwork engraved fittings bearing grotesque motifs, fantastic animals, grotesques, fantastic figures, plant tendril ornament, wickerwork ornament, and male figures. Door leaves veneered inside with rosewood and ebony in geometric arrangements divided by inlaid bone veins, with figures in engraved bone signed Hippocrates on the left and Hermes on the right. Behind the doors are twelve compartments. Drawer and door locks fitted with engraved steel plates; the drawer lock blocks the left door leaf. Steel hinges., A wooden chest with a rectangular shape and a hinged top sits against a plain neutral background. The wood shows a warm brown color with visible grain, and dark metal fittings and decorative plates cover much of the front and top. The metalwork is dark brown to black and features ornate, pierced and embossed patterns in flowing, curving motifs across the lower doors and a central placard on the upper lid. The chest corners have reinforced metal straps and brackets, and the top has flat metal bands and a worn surface with lighter scuff marks. The overall palette includes shades of brown, dark brown, black, and small areas of lighter worn highlights on the metal and wood.
