Compass, measuring instrument, ca. mid-18th century, Western Europe. Compass with a bone scale around the dial with cardinal directions and a hand behind the glass, in a wooden frame decorated with relief acanthus, with a bone lining decorated with Regency ornamentation. Height 13.3 cm; width 8 cm., A rectangular object with a carved dark brown surface featuring ornate leaf-like patterns surrounds a central circular inset containing a metallic disc and a glass-covered needle; the circular rim has metallic silver and gold tones with an inner gold ring and an outer silver ring, and a few small dark metal components are visible on the rim. The sides and edges of the object are light cream or ivory with decorative green bands and small dark markings, and there are small rounded cream-colored knobs on the sides. The background is a smooth neutral gray.
