Pocket watch by Jacques Marcet fl. ca. 1725–ca. 1750. Gilded silver, almost spherical, double-case pocket watch with enameled numerals on the dial. Cases decorated with plant decoration: inner case with flowers in a vase set in a ribbon-formed reserve that on the outer side forms heart-shaped loops with floral sprigs between them; a strip of plant-floral tendrils on the case side; outer case with a flower sprig in a circular central reserve surrounded by an interwoven ribbon and floral sprigs in the fields. Movement with an openwork bow and the Jacques/Marcet signature. Inside both cases is the number E. 4 unidentified. Engraved case decoration stylized in a Middle Eastern style—possibly intended for the Turkish market. Watchmaker may have worked in England rather than France possibly a Huguenot. Second quarter of the 18th century; France . Timepiece. Dimensions: H 6.5 cm × W 5.5 cm × D 4 cm., A circular metal object with an ornate engraved surface rests against a plain light gray background; the object appears golden with darker engraved lines forming a dense pattern of floral and foliate motifs, curving vines, and petal shapes, and it has a small hinge or clasp at the top and a subtle rounded edge around its perimeter, showing areas of slightly darker and lighter gold tones.
