Pocket watch by Jacques Marcet fl. ca. 1725–ca. 1750. Gilded silver, almost spherical, double case; enameled numerals on the dial. Cases decorated with plant motifs: inner case shows flowers in a vase in a reserve formed by a ribbon that on the outer side forms heart-shaped loops with floral sprigs between them. Side strip of plant-floral tendrils. Outer case has a flower sprig in a circular central reserve surrounded by an interwoven ribbon and floral sprigs in the fields. Movement bears an openwork bow and the Jacques/Marcet signature. Inside both cases is the number E. 4 unidentified. Engraved case decoration stylized in a Middle Eastern manner; possibly intended for the Turkish market. Watchmaker may have worked in England rather than France if he was a Huguenot. 2nd quarter of the 18th century; France ; timepiece. Height 6.5 cm, width 5.5 cm, depth 4 cm., A round pocket watch with its lid open showing a domed transparent cover and a circular gold-colored face with engraved decorative patterns, dark bluish hands, and several black markings around the edge; the watch sits against a plain light gray background.
