Classicist sugar bowl by Christian Jacob Haase fl. 1797–1810, Late Classicist style. Oval sugar bowl with a centrally arched hinged lid topped by a wooden knobbed dome; front features a keyhole set in a dot-engraved cartouche from which festoons of lanceolate leaves extend. Maker likely from the youngest generation of the Haase family—Christian Jacob, son of Johann Jakob Haase II; became master in 1797 and left Gdansk with his family in 1810. The HAASE namemark, stamped in a rectangle with rounded corners on this bowl, may be attributable to him though it differs from his father’s mark. Materials/subject: sugar vessel with festoon ornament, classicism. Date: 1799. Place: Gdansk, Royal Prussia Poland. Dimensions: height 13.7 cm, width 15 cm, depth 11.5 cm; weight 540 g., A rounded metallic container with a domed lid and a small dark knob on top sits on a flat surface; the container is silver in color with engraved decorative garlands and floral motifs along its curved sides, a keyhole-shaped opening in the front surrounded by dotted engraved patterns, and a scalloped border near the top edge; the lid has subtle dents and reflective highlights, and the container rests on a few spherical feet that are also silver; the background is a gradient of gray.
