Pocket watch by Carl Willougby, 2nd quarter of the 18th century, London, England. Silver pocket watch with striking function in a partially openwork case, richly engraved over the surface with acanthus twigs, flowers, birds, two masks male and female, acanthus scrolls, fish-scale ornament, shells and decorative masks. Center features a circular reserve of acanthus twig, volutes and fish scales enclosing a bell. Glazed lid set in an openwork frame decorated with a floral twig and a broken ribbon. Mechanism between two circular plates supported by columns, with spindle escapement, a worm with chain, and a balance drum. Gilded openwork crown engraved with an acanthus twig, combined with an openwork foot and a woman's mask. White-enameled dial edged with a gilded knurled ribbon, Arabic hour numerals, minutes marked with vertical lines; steel hands. Height 8 cm; width 5.5 cm; dial diameter 4.5 cm., A decorative metallic oval object with ornate filigree patterns in silver tones on one side and a clear domed cover on the other, suspended from a small silver loop and hinge at the top; the filigree side shows intricate swirling floral and scroll motifs with darker shadowed recesses, while the clear side reveals a few internal metal components visible through the transparent surface; the overall colors visible are silver, grey, and the subtle translucence of the clear cover against a pale light grey background.
