Decorative cast iron oil lamp, 19th century, Poland; square plinth with an oval boat-shaped container, slightly raised end and flat hinged lid. A young man sits on the lamp, leaning over an open book. Modeled on a French design possibly Thomire, known in several copies; likely decorative rather than functional deep fuel tank unsuitable for lighting; no hole in the cover to vent the body. Casting quality lower than some identical examples; possibly cast in Poland Aleksandra glassworks in Bialogon, Drews in Warsaw, or Suchedniów glassworks have been suggested, with replicas also produced at Prussian foundries Gliwice, Berlin. Height 28.5 cm, width 11 cm, depth 33.5 cm., A dark bronze-colored figurine of a seated person viewed from behind, positioned on a boat-shaped bowl with fluted sides atop a pedestal, all resting on a square base; the figure wears draped cloth around the lower body and has short wavy hair, with visible smooth contours and reflective highlights. The background is a pale grayish-lavender and the surface beneath the base is a light reflective gray, showing a faint reflection of the object. Colors visible include dark bronze, black, pale gray, grayish-lavender, and light gray.
