Decorative cast-iron oil lamp, attributed to Szewczykowski, Roman 1849–1901. Square plinth supporting an oval boat-shaped container with a slightly raised end and a flat hinged lid; a young man sits on the lamp, leaning over an open book. Modeled on a French design perhaps Thomire and known in several copies; likely 19th century, probably cast in Poland possible workshops: Aleksandra glassworks in Bialogon, Drews in Warsaw, or Suchedniów glassworks; less likely the Minter family or Prussian royal foundries. Casting quality is relatively low compared with other known examples; unlike other examples, there is no hole in the cover closing the opening in the body. These lamps were decorative elements e.g., for a fireplace and were not suitable for actual lighting due to weak capillarity of oil in such deep fuel tanks. Materials: cast iron. Function: lighting/ornamental. Dimensions: height 28.5 cm, width 11 cm, depth 33.5 cm. Location: 19th-century Poland, possibly Warsaw., A dark bronze-colored sculptural figure of a seated person is shown reclining on an elongated boat-shaped base with a rounded, fluted underside and a pedestal support; the figure has short, wavy hair and is draped in a textured cloth while holding a small object near their torso, with legs extended along the base and feet resting near the boat’s prow. The scene is set against a smooth pale gray background with soft, even lighting that highlights the metallic sheen and subtle shadows on the dark bronze, black, and gray tones of the sculpture.
