Decorative cast iron oil lamp, cast by Szewczykowski, Roman 1849–1901. 19th century, Poland. Square plinth supporting an oval boat-shaped container with a slightly raised end and a flat hinged lid. A young man sits on the lamp, leaning over an open book. Modeled on a French design possibly Thomire known in several copies; similar examples made at various workshops and foundries including glassworks and royal Prussian foundries though casting quality varies — this example’s casting is of lower quality and likely cast in Poland. Unlike other examples, there is no hole in the cover closing the opening in the body; these objects were decorative e.g., for a fireplace and not suitable for lighting. Materials: decorative cast iron. Function: lighting decorative. Dimensions: height 28.5 cm; width 11 cm; depth 33.5 cm., A dark bronze-colored sculpture of a seated figure reading sits atop a boat-shaped basin with a fluted lower half, all mounted on a short pedestal and square base; the figure has short textured hair and draped clothing with visible folds, and the surface shows subtle highlights and shadows in tones of brown and black against a pale gray background.
