Decorative cast-iron oil lamp, 19th century, Poland; attributed to Szewczykowski, Roman 1849–1901. Square plinth supporting an oval, boat-shaped container with a slightly raised end and a flat hinged lid. A young man sits on the lamp, leaning over an open book. Modeled on a French design possibly Thomire and known in several copies; likely cast in Poland casting quality lower than some other known examples. Unlike other examples, there is no hole in the cover closing the opening in the body. These objects were mostly decorative e.g., for a fireplace and not suitable for actual lighting due to weak capillarity of oil in deep fuel tanks. Materials: cast iron. Function: decorative lighting object. Dimensions: height 28.5 cm; width 11 cm; depth 33.5 cm., A dark bronze sculpture of a seated figure in a draped garment reclining inside a boat-like basin mounted on a fluted pedestal, the figure shown in profile with head bowed and arms resting on knees, rendered with textured hair and smooth musculature; the basin has a rounded rim and a carved, ribbed underside, and the pedestal rises from a square base. The visible colors include dark brown, black, and shades of gray against a pale gray background.
