Souvenir key, steel, with a full shank and a simple feather in the form of two square brackets. Gilded bronze knot and handle: oval handle composed of two U-shaped sections decorated with leaves, fastened with a ducal mitre. Inside, an oval plaque with a Gothic monogram M and blue enamel on one side, and a cast inscription on the other: VON / DER STADT / DARMSTADT / DEN 26 DECEMB: / 1833. Given together to Duchess Mathilde Caroline of Bavaria 1813–1862 and her husband, the future ruler of Hesse, Ludwig III, on the occasion of their wedding by the city of Darmstadt, 1833. Height 8.9 cm, width 2.6 cm., A single ornate key is shown against a plain light gray background, featuring a decorative top with gold tones and a small crown element, an oval medallion with a dark bluish area, and an elongated silvery metal shaft with a few notches at the biting end; the visible colors include gold, silver, dark blue, gray, and a hint of darker metallic patina.
