Mass chalice by David I Schwestermüller fl. 1628–1678, goldsmith. Liturgical vessel vasa sacra, ca. 1630–1635. Height 25.5 cm, width 15.1 cm. Mass chalice on a profiled multi-leafed plinth and a quadrangular foot decorated with relief winged angel heads in conch-volute reserves, above which hang campanulas and plastic angel heads set on the edges of the divisions; ovoid nodus with similar decoration. A goblet with an openwork basket with carved Passion themes — the Prayer in the Garden of Olives Agony in the Garden, Ecce Homo, Christ in the Mystical Winepress — among which are figures of angels with the Arma Christi. Chalice depicts Christ as the man of sorrows with instruments of the Passion. Graphic patterns likely compile several engravings; auricular ornamentation shows Netherlandish sources, while the depictions show features of late 16th-century Italian engravings cf.
