Pocket watch with key, Norton, Eardley fl. 1770–1792 born 1728, died 1792. Casemaker Germany, 3rd quarter of the 18th century. Pocket repeater in two silver cases. Smooth outer case; inner case with framed glazed lid, mechanism cover engraved with an openwork floral twig, winding hole, and bell. White enameled dial with black Roman hour numerals, minute scale marked with dashes, calendar with Arabic numerals, three steel hands hour and minute in openwork weave, third straight for date. Small seconds subdial with Arabic numerals at the bottom. Dial signed EARDLEY NORTON / LONDON. Movement: gilded brass circular plates connected by pillars, spring-powered drive, spindle escapement; lower plate with openwork crown richly decorated with acanthus tendrils and engraved acanthus volutes; cut-out reserve bearing engraved signature Eardley / Norton London. Preserved winding key on a chain. 3rd quarter of the 18th century. Case: Germany; movement/maker: London. Timepiece. Height 8 cm, width 6.2 cm, dial diameter 5.3 cm., A circular metallic object with a hinged lid is open to show its interior; the metal surfaces are mainly silver with areas of darker gray tarnish and faint scratches, and there is a small darker oval mark on the left interior. The hinge and rim are visible with similar silver tones, and a small dark rectangular latch piece is attached on the right edge. The background is a very light gray, and overall the image shows a few subtle variations of silver, gray, and faint off-white on the metal.
