Pocket watch with key by Eardley Norton born 1728, died 1792; fl. 1770–1792. Two silver cases: smooth outer case and inner case with framed glazed lid; mechanism cover engraved with an openwork floral/acanthus twig, with a winding hole and bell. Repeater mechanism. White enameled dial with black Roman hour numerals, minute scale marked with dashes, calendar with Arabic numerals, three steel hands hour and minute openwork weave, third straight for day of month, small seconds subdial with Arabic numerals at bottom. Dial signed EARDLEY NORTON / LONDON. Movement: gilded brass with circular plates connected by pillars, spring-powered drive, spindle escapement; lower plate with openwork crown richly decorated with acanthus tendrils and engraved acanthus volutes; cut-out reserve engraved Eardley / Norton London. Preserved winding key on a chain. Case: Germany, 3rd quarter of the 18th century; maker casemaker active in Germany; movement/case work associated with London. Timepiece. Dimensions: height 8 cm, width 6.2 cm, dial diameter 5.3 cm., An open pocket watch with an ornate inner mechanism and a short chain; the watch case interior shows a circular ornate plate in gold with decorative engravings and intricate cutwork, small circular blue accents, and a small blue disc, all set inside a metal rim; the outer case visible beneath has a silver color with a repeating leaf-like engraved pattern; the attached chain and winding key are brass-colored with darker metal at the key tip; the background is a plain pale off-white.
