Pocket watch with key, maker: Eardley Norton fl. 1770–1792; born 1728, died 1792. Casemaker: APD Germany; 3rd quarter of the 18th century. Repeater pocket watch in two silver cases: smooth outer case and inner case with framed glazed lid. Mechanism cover engraved with an openwork floral/acanthus twig, with a winding hole and a bell. White enameled dial with black Roman hour numerals, minute scale marked with dashes, calendar with Arabic numerals, three steel hands hour and minute openwork weave; third straight for date. Small seconds subdial at bottom with Arabic numerals. Dial signed “EARDLEY NORTON / LONDON.” Movement: gilded brass plates connected by pillars, spring-powered drive, spindle escapement; lower plate with openwork crown richly decorated with acanthus tendrils and engraved acanthus volutes; cut-out reserve bearing engraved maker’s signature “Eardley / Norton London.” Preserved winding key on a chain. Date: 3rd quarter of the 18th century. Places: case made in Germany; maker active in London. Object type: timepiece. Dimensions: height 8 cm; width 6.2 cm; dial diameter 5.3 cm., An open pocket watch case with its inner mechanisms exposed lies against a pale background; the case and inner rim appear silver, the visible movement components and a linked chain are brass or gold-toned, and there is a darker metal winding key attached to the chain; the exposed interior shows circular plates and decorative perforated elements in brass, a smooth silvery inner surface with some small dark marks, and a few small round fittings; the chain forms a loose arc above the case and casts subtle shadows on the pale surface.
