Double snuffbox, enameller LZ France?, fl. ca. 1700. Double-sided snuffbox, tall, narrowed halfway up; slightly bulging lids, framed by silver, profiled fittings, white-enameled, decorated with colourful scenes from the story of Samson depicted against a landscape painted in grisaille. Sides: two representations — Samson going to the Philistine city of Timna, shown the way by three women, and Samson fighting a lion. Lids: Samson carrying the door the city gate to the top of the mountain opposite Hebron, and Samson taking honey from the lion's mouth. Reverse of the lids: two landscapes with architecture painted in grisaille and colourful flowers painted in the bottoms. Early 18th century, France, enamelling; smoking accessory. Dimensions: height 7 cm, width 7.7 cm, depth 4.7 cm., A small hinged box with a curving, hourglass-shaped body and metal trim, decorated with a painted scene showing a man wearing a blue draped garment and pinkish footwear grappling with a yellow lion; the painted background includes sketchy grey foliage and ground shading, and the box shows additional colorful painted decoration on the lid; visible colors include white, yellow, blue, pink, grey, brown, and metallic silver.
