Double snuffbox, enameller LZ France?; fl. ca. 1700. Double-sided snuffbox, tall, narrowed halfway up; slightly bulging lids, framed by silver with profiled fittings. White-enameled, decorated with colourful scenes from the story of Samson depicted against a landscape painted in grisailles. Sides: Samson going to the Philistine city of Timna, shown the way by three women, and Samson fighting a lion. Lids: Samson carrying the door the city gate to the top of the mountain opposite Hebron and Samson taking honey from the lion's mouth. Reverses of the lids: two landscapes with architecture painted in grisailles and colourful flowers painted in the bottoms. Early 18th century France?, enamelling; smoking accessory. Height 7 cm; width 7.7 cm; depth 4.7 cm., A small decorative box with a curving hourglass-like profile and shiny metallic rims, shown resting on a reflective surface. The main body is white with a painted scene of a few figures in historical dress: one figure on the left holds a staff and wears purplish clothing with blue footwear, while a group of figures to the right wear garments in yellow, blue, pink, green, and purple tones, some with head coverings. The top edge shows a multicolored floral motif in shades of pink, yellow, blue, and green, and the metallic rims appear silver in color. The background behind the box is a plain light gray.
