Oval toilet box by Thomas I Pitts fl. 1755–c.1793. Silver; Georgian/George III style, 1780/1781, London, England. Oval box on four volute feet formed of acanthus leaves. Lower edge decorated with a band of bay leaves; above, laurel festoons with suspended medallions containing rosettes; upper edge with an anthemion frieze. Hinged recessed cover bordered with a band of bay leaves matching the body. Central medallion on the cover with a relief of four putti at a sacrificial altar. Ornament: festoons, palmettes, anthemions, bay leaves; relief decorations. Function: toilet accessory. Dimensions: height 12 cm, width 27.1 cm, depth 20 cm; weight 1627 g., A shallow oval metal dish with a raised rim and a matching lid set slightly ajar, both showing a smooth reflective interior and decorative edging; the dish and lid are mainly pale gold and warm beige with areas of darker golden brown reflections and a small dark grayish spot near the center of the dish; the rim decoration and lid trim show a slightly darker antique gold tone, and the background is a soft light gray.
