Fragrance container vinaigrette, maker: Thomas Shaw fl. 1822–ca. 1840; 1782–1845, goldsmith. Vinaigrette in the form of a bag with an envelope closure and a protruding tongue, decorated on the front with dot-engraved flowers and leaves. Hinged lid opens to an inner openwork insert decorated with plant scrolls. Materials/technique: engraving, openwork. Date: 1834/1835. Place: Birmingham, England, Great Britain. Function: toilet accessory. Dimensions: height 2.1 cm; width 1.5 cm; depth 1 cm; weight 10 g., A small open metal box with two hinged lids is shown resting on a pale background; the exterior of the box is a silvery color with areas of wear and faint engraved patterns, while the interior surfaces have a golden tone with visible scratches and a few small worn spots; one lid is upright showing a perforated inner panel with small holes and a golden interior edge, and the other lid lies open revealing a scratched golden interior; the box's interior compartment is silvery with a slightly darker metallic patina and the hinge and rim show signs of use.
