Leg Tray by Robert Harper fl. 1853–1869 and Harper & Son London; goldsmith's firm; fl. 1869–1889. Circular patera supported on three volute legs terminating in vine leaves at the base. The mirror features a blind reserve richly decorated with engraved Neo-Rococo ornament in the form of rocailles, rooster combs, acanthus volutes, and floral sprigs. The slightly raised, openwork collar features relief decoration of vine leaves and grapes, with four Dionysus masks at the feet, and high-relief insects butterflies, moths, midges, snails, and a caterpillar. The collar edge is edged with a profiled half-cylinder decorated with shells and a rooster comb. Inscriptions/themes: insects, vines, snails, caterpillars, head of Dionysus, rocaille, volutes, acanthus leaf. Date: 1860/1861. Place: London, England, Great Britain. Medium/function: vessel. Dimensions: height 3.9 cm; diameter 32.5 cm; weight 895 g., A round decorative tray with an ornate raised rim and sculpted edge, the tray and rim appearing in metallic silver tones; the flat central surface is smooth and reflective with a finely engraved ornamental cartouche motif in the center, also in silver, and the rim features sculpted floral and scrollwork details in darker and lighter silver shades; the overall background is a pale off-white to light gray, and there are subtle darker gray reflections and spots on the tray surface.
