Single-candle candlestick by William Cafe fl. 1757–ca. 1802, silver, Rococo/George II style, 1763/1764, London, England. Rocaille ornament on a raised domed foot with a hexagonal rim decorated with flower heads at the corners, passing into a baluster shaft and terminating in a vase-shaped socket with a disc-shaped drip pan. Decorated with rococo motifs—rocailles, plant tendrils, flowers, cartouches, shells and acanthus leaves—with a slightly spirally twisted overall decoration. Function: lighting. Height 29 cm; diameter 16.9 cm; weight 695 g., A tall ornate candlestick rendered in silver tones stands against a plain gradient background of gray fading to a lighter gray, featuring a decorative flared top, a slender central shaft with a bulbous floral-carved midsection, and a wide sculpted base adorned with raised floral and scroll motifs; the surface shows smooth polished areas and detailed carved reliefs with visible highlights and soft shadows in shades of silver, gray, and muted white.
