Shepherd's Scene with a Shepherd Milking a Goat. The overall tones are browns and dark blues. The surface is fully composed, the focal point is a cow standing at the back and a group of five animals—three sheep and two goats—filling the right side of the scene. On the right, a seated shepherd in a sheepskin coat and hat milks a goat into a wooden bucket. Next to the goat is a small white kid. At the front a dog laps water from a shallow pond. In the background on the right, city buildings are visible on a hill beneath a dark, puffy-clouded sky. In the upper corner is the Temple of the Sibyl in Tivoli. Several sheep and rams share identical faces. Philipp Peter Roos, known as Rosa di Tivoli born August 30, 1657 in Sankt Goar; died January 17, 1706 in Rome — German landscape painter; the painting may be by him possibly related to NB 4918, NB 4920, and NB 4921. 18th century, Italy; overdoor; oil on canvas; height 91.0 cm, width 127.0 cm., A painted scene set within an ornate white frame shows a group of farm animals and a person. The dominant colors are dark browns and muted creams on the animals, with deep greenish-blue and gray tones in the cloudy sky and distant landscape, and warm brown and ochre on the seated figure’s clothing and hat. Several sheep and goats with woolly cream and brown coats are arranged across the foreground, a large brown cow with prominent horns stands toward the center, and a few darker-coated animals appear toward the left. A person wearing a dark hat and brownish garments sits among the animals, facing toward the right. The frame surrounding the painting is carved and painted in white with decorative flourishes, and there are vertical elements on either side with pale blue-green and darker green ornamental details.
