Crossing the River, unknown painter Dutch, 17th/18th century, painting, oil on panel, height 47 cm, width 64 cm, A landscape painting shows a group of people, animals, and carts near a shallow body of water under a partly cloudy sky. On the left a large tree with green foliage rises above a darker embankment. In the foreground a person wearing a red cloak rides a white horse, followed by a dark dog and accompanied by other riders and a covered wagon with wooden wheels and a figure inside. Toward the center and right several horses and a few riders are wading through the water, and a person standing in the water holds a staff and is accompanied by a small dog. In the background to the right there is a group of trees and a ruined stone structure with arches, near which a few more figures and cattle are visible. The color palette includes blues and grays in the sky, greens and browns in the foliage and earth, darker browns and blacks in the animals and figures, white on the horse and highlights, and touches of red on clothing.
