Stanislaw August Poniatowski 1732–1798 in cuirass, unknown artist from the circle of Stanislaw August Poniatowski's court. Early portrait of the king with attributes of the monarch and commander — in the uniform of the Cadet Corps and cuirass, wearing the Order of the White Eagle 1756, holding a regiment in his right hand; in the background a helmet with a plume, a tricorn military hat, and an ermine royal cloak. The portrait pose follows the canon of monarchical imagery used in the third quarter of the 18th century. One of the earliest portraits of the king, predating similarly posed portraits by Per Kraff 1768. Before these, only two likenesses known in the literature, both by unspecified painters: Christoph Werner en pied and an unidentified Grandis. Dated before 1768. Portrait, height 316.0 cm, width 161.0 cm., A full-length portrait of a man standing indoors on a checkered floor, wearing ornate historical clothing including a dark blue coat with red and gold embroidered details, a blue sash across his chest, and pale yellow breeches; he has light-colored hair and a neutral facial expression, one hand resting on his hip and the other holding a staff that leans on a red-draped table beside him. The table is covered with red and off-white fabrics and displays a dark hat with white plumes and other decorative objects; a large red curtain hangs behind the man next to a dark column and a red cushioned chair with gold trim is visible to his side. The background shows a cloudy sky with muted blues and grays, and the palette includes colors such as red, blue, gold, pale yellow, black, white, brown, and gray.
