The icon depicts the bust of Saint Nicholas dressed in bishop's robes. In his left hand he holds an open Gospel; his right hand is raised in blessing. On either side are medallions with busts of Christ holding a book and the Mother of God with an omophorion. The work is schematic with a simplified color scheme; the saint's face is ascetic, dark-toned and deeply wrinkled. 19th century, Russia; icon; height 31.0 cm, width 26.5 cm., A painted icon of a bearded figure shown from the waist up, wearing layered robes with patterned circular medallions in red and gold and a green and blue-striped outer garment, holding an open book with visible pages, and making a gesture with one hand; the figure has a large gold halo with worn areas and a dark brown face and hair; two smaller round gold medallions flank the head showing additional faint figures; the background is dark green with a narrow darker border, and the visible colors include gold, dark brown, green, red, blue, and a pale beige on the book pages.
