Lekythos with a sphinx, unknown Attic workshop. A small Attic red-figure lekythos with a vise. The neck is narrow; the belly is round, mounted on a round foot. The central part of the front belly is decorated with an image of a sphinx; the back of the vessel has worn finials. 1st half of the 4th century BC, Attica. Vessel; height 9.4 cm, diameter 6 cm., A rounded ceramic vessel with a narrow neck and flared rim, showing a painted figurative scene; the surface is primarily black with exposed areas of natural clay brown where paint has worn or been reserved, and there are scattered lighter tan spots. The body features a stylized animal figure with wings and a tail, rendered in brown against the black ground, with linear hatch marks and dotted patterns on the figure. The neck and rim are mostly black with some brown losses, and the base shows a brown ring along the foot where glaze is missing. Overall the colors visible are black, brown, tan, and lighter beige areas from wear.
