Wall painting: Saint John the Apostle, Nubian workshop; wall painting of John the Evangelist Saint; ?–ca. 100 — iconography. Depicted frontally, preserved fragment showing the head and left shoulder. Head surrounded by a circular yellow halo outlined with purple and white stripe. Facial contours and features painted in black. High forehead, regular eyebrow arches, large almond-shaped eyes wide open with marked irises and pupils, straight nose ending in a wedge, large protruding right ear left ear missing. Long white beard ending in a pointed tip. On the white robe, the Greek letter eta H visible on the figure’s right shoulder. Folds of the robe marked with wide yellow and purple lines. Original plaster. 8th century, Faras. Wall painting. Dimensions: 105 × 78.5 -79 × 4.5 cm; original plaster 82 × 36 cm; height 105 cm, width 78.5–79 cm, depth 4.5 cm, original plaster height 82 cm, width 62 cm., A weathered fragment of painted plaster mounted on a larger pale beige backing, showing an irregular shaped central piece with worn patches and textured surface; the fragment displays a palette of beige, tan, ochre, and muted gold tones with traces of faded reddish-brown and pale pink pigments; several areas of the paint are flaked or missing revealing rougher gray-beige substrate; thin linear strokes in darker reddish-brown appear in parts of the fragment; the mounting has a narrow darker border visible along the edges and small dark gray clips at the top corners.
