Hand cross, Ethiopian workshop. The upper part, inscribed in a rhombus, is mounted on a long shaft terminating at the bottom with a rectangular plaque; below it is decorated with a cross with rhomboid arms. The cross is covered with dense geometric ornament; in the central part is a small cross rosette. The side and upper arms are stylized as flower petals a schematic lily. The lower arm is rhombus-shaped with cross rosettes. The shaft is decorated with incisions in a broken-line pattern. The plaque has a cross rosette in the middle and incisions parallel to its longer edges. 20th century, Addis Ababa. Cross; height 36.5 cm, width 9.5 cm., A carved wooden object with a long narrow handle and decorative ends, displaying a rich brown tone with darker brown carved recesses and lighter brown highlights; the top end fans into a symmetrical, leaf-like cluster with carved geometric and linear patterns, while the handle features a vertical series of carved shapes and textured lines, and the bottom end tapers into a pointed, cross-like motif with similar carved detailing; the background is a smooth pale gray.
