Processional cross, Ethiopian workshop. In the center of the cross, in the tondo, a standing man is depicted frontally with hands raised in an orant gesture. On his sides stand a lion and a lioness. The man has a long, ankle-length beard—likely the hermit Paulos. The tondo is bordered by a wide braid-decorated band from which radiate small crosses with rhomboid arms. The short, sleeve-shaped handle is decorated with two rings with a braided ornament. The reverse shows a winged figure above two birds. 20th century, Ethiopia. Cross; height 44 cm, width 24 cm., A carved wooden object with a long cylindrical handle and an ornate top featuring a circular medallion surrounded by a radiating geometric design; the carving includes a central figure with two animal faces flanking it, all rendered in carved texture and shallow relief. The surface shows visible carved lines and crosshatching, braided motif bands around parts of the handle, and carved openwork shapes beneath the medallion. The colors visible are various shades of brown and darker brown highlights against a pale gray background.
