Skyphos with painted decoration. Engraved ornament at the upper edge of the vessel: an egg-shaped structure and a wavy line, framed by parallel lines. At the handles and in the center, vertical, engraved branches with preserved traces of white leaves hang downwards. Side A: a woman shown in left profile with a xylophone in her right hand and a branch in her left. The figure is flanked by small trees on either side. 4th century BC, Apulia, Southern Italy. Skyphos vessel. Height 12.1 cm, width 11.1 cm., A rounded ceramic vessel with a narrow base and flared rim sits against a pale gray background; the body is predominantly black with areas of worn terracotta showing through near the rim and base, and there are decorative pale cream and faded pink linear and dotted motifs on the black surface, including a curving dotted vine-like element and wavy vertical lines, plus a small protruding handle near the top that shows chipped black and exposed terracotta.
