Jug, red-figure pottery, Greek, mermaid mythological, Athens Attica, 3rd quarter of the 5th century BC. A small jug with a low foot recessed at the bottom; edges of the foot slightly rounded and tapered upwards. Body slightly wider than the foot, rounded at the bottom, almost cylindrical in the lower half and gently tapering in the upper half, merging into a widely flared outward spout. Below the spout is a vertically mounted, cylindrical, slightly flattened handle bent into a circle. Light orange clay with black shiny varnish. On the body a mermaid in right profile with wings raised upwards left wing behind, protruding above the right; on her head a diadem marked with white dots. Feathers indicated by lines—long and thin at wingtips and tail; thin and thick elsewhere. Image emphasized below with a row of dots. Side of the foot chipped, rim edge slightly chipped, varnish abrasion; part of the rim filled with plaster. Vessel height 6.6 cm., A dark brown ceramic cup with a rounded body, short foot, and a flared rim, showing a handle on the left and areas of wear and small chips; the cup has painted orange decorative elements on its right side and small scattered lighter marks on its surface, set against a neutral gray background with a subtle reflection beneath; colors visible include dark brown, orange, lighter brown or beige from worn areas, and gray.
