Sarcophagus with a depiction of a married couple and a shepherd, unknown Roman workshop. A large Roman sarcophagus with strigilla S-shaped grooves forming a central medallion, decorated with a standing, thoughtful shepherd leaning on a staff pedum. On the front sides are figures of the presumed deceased standing against draped fabrics parapetasmata: left, a woman in a tunic and long cloak palla holding a scroll volumen in her left hand; right, a man in a tunic and toga with a contabulatio specially wrapped hem holding a scroll in his left hand and wearing mullei leather military boots. Both frontal figures have incompletely finished heads. The side walls show reliefs of a seated griffin with a lion's head; the left side near its lower left corner has an opening to the interior, and the lower left corner of the right wall is missing. The rear wall is more roughly worked. Considerable abrasions and damage, particularly to the corners and the figures on both sides of the front wall. Circa 270, Roman Empire 27 BC–476. Materials/format: Roman sarcophagus. Dimensions: height 100 cm, width 214 cm, depth 100 cm, weight 2400 kg., A carved stone relief of a robed human figure shown from the waist up, rendered in pale gray and off-white tones, with a rounded head and facial features that are worn and smoothed; the figure wears layered drapery with flowing folds and a draped cloak held across the chest by one hand, and the other hand rests near the waist. Behind the figure is a carved backdrop with decorative tied cloth elements and curtain-like folds in similar pale gray stone, and the background beyond the relief appears as a smooth neutral gray.
