Vessel with hieratic inscription. Egyptian conical clay vessel, tapering toward the bottom, irregular, widest at approx. 3/4 of the height. Narrow, only slightly sloping shoulders; short, wide neck; very gently rounded, slightly flaring rim; pointed bottom. Handcrafted: upper part shoulders, neck, rim turned. Smooth surface, externally probably covered with a layer of engobe. Made of Nile clay NB2 Vienna System. Remains of a hieratic inscription in black in the lower part of the belly. Complete, well preserved. Old Kingdom, ca. 2686–2181 BC. Dimensions: height 12.5 cm; rim dia. 5.4 cm; belly dia. 8 cm. Comparative parallels cited Petrie, Hope, Reisner, Brunton, Mace, Keiser et al.., A round, worn clay vessel viewed from above with a wide dark opening at its center; the vessel surface shows a rough, textured appearance with small pits and specks and a warm brown to reddish-brown color against a solid light gray background.
