Awl made of unworked animal bone with a sharpened end used for piercing materials fabrics or leather. Early Jazira III period / Early Dynastic III period, ca. 2600–ca. 2350 BC. From Tell Abu Hafur northeastern Syria, Northern Mesopotamia Khabur basin. Material: bone. Function: tool. Dimensions: height 9.3 cm; width 2.9 cm; diameter of pointed working end 0.2–0.5 cm; weight 8 g., A long tapered object with a rough porous surface in shades of beige, tan, brown, and gray sits against a solid gray background; the left end is thicker and irregular with pitted, sponge-like texture, while the right end narrows to a pointed tip with darker gray and brown discoloration along the lower edge; there are a few darker smudges and small patches of black and red visible on the midsection, and an arching concave notch appears along the lower side near the thicker end.
