Caption
Head of a woman wearing a veil. The face is oval with regular features: rounded chin, small compact mouth, and slim cheeks. From the nose, skin folds extend diagonally downwards across the cheeks. The eyes are large, open, and set rather deeply; upper and lower eyelids are thick, outer and inner corners at the same level. Eyeballs are convex with dimpled pupils. Eyebrows are cylindrical, sloping toward the temples. Forehead high, convex above the nose and slightly sunken above the eyebrows. Hair lush, wavy, parted above the forehead and combed over the temples, revealing the lower parts of the ears. Head covered with a veil. Head in semi-profile. 1st half of the 4th century BC, Athens. Bas-relief; 12 cm high, 11 cm wide, 11 cm deep., A stone fragment carved in an off-white to beige color shows the left profile of a human face with a pronounced nose, closed lips, and a recessed eye; the carving includes textured areas suggesting hair or a head covering and a rough, irregular uncarved back and base, with patches of lighter and darker beige and subtle grayish shadows against a plain gray background.
