Head of Alexander the Great, unknown Roman workshop. Alexander III the Great King of Macedonia; 356–323 BC, male portrait, Roman sculpture, Roman copy from a Greek original, head of a young man turned clearly to the left in a pathetic manner. The head is reflected at the base of the neck. Oval face with unemphasized skeletal structure; prominent mouth with slightly parted lips; straight nose, reflected at the tip; almond-shaped, deep-set eyes with strongly projecting, expressive eyebrows. Forehead flat, low, covered with lush locks of hair. Hairstyle of loosely arranged, slightly curled locks; above the forehead, shifted off-axis to the right, a lock of hair radiates outward, slightly raised and clearly different from the others. At the back, hair arranged in wavy locks, with only the lower part freely arranged. Dated 140–160 AD previously dated 150–160 AD. Findspot: Rome via Nomentana. Sculpture; height 19.8 cm, width 16.1 cm, depth 14.2 cm, weight 8.5 kg., A sculpted head in a side profile view rests on a square base, showing carved wavy hair that falls around the ear and a smooth facial plane with closed eyes and a relaxed mouth. The head is a pale off-white with subtle beige and light brown discolorations, while the base is a dark green marble with lighter green and white mottling and a few darker spots. The background is a uniform medium gray.
